Common auto electrical jobs in Miami

Miami runs along the Gold Coast Highway between Mermaid Beach and Burleigh Heads, with North Nobby hill, three beaches, Pizzey Park and light industry around Christine Avenue. Light rail stations now run along the highway through the suburb.

North Burleigh and Nobby Beach parking

Cars parked at North Burleigh or near Nobby Beach get blasted with salty air on windy days. The headlight and taillight connectors are often the first to fail, along with corroded fuse box terminals on older cars. If a light works one day and not the next, corrosion in the plug is a likely cause. Cleaning the plug and using a little dielectric grease on the terminals can stop it coming back.

Small business vans around Christine Avenue

Light industrial and commercial premises around Christine Avenue house trades, suppliers and service businesses. Their vans often carry extra lights, inverters and charging for tools or devices. When something stops working, it is often a blown fuse, a loose earth or a chafed wire behind shelving. Our guide on how to check and replace a fuse is a good first step before calling for help.

Electric windows that stick

Older cars in beachside suburbs like Miami often have window problems because sand and salt get into the window channels, making the motor work harder. Over time the motor slows down or a switch fails. Cleaning the window rubbers and channels can help. If a window is slow or stops, the motor, regulator or switch may need replacing. If you want to check it yourself first, our electric window troubleshooting guide lists the likely causes.

Spotlights and light bars for coastal trips

Plenty of Miami locals drive 4WDs for beach trips and camping further south. Spotlights and light bars are popular, but they must be wired through a relay with a fuse at the battery. Wiring that runs through the bullbar and grille is exposed to salt and should be sealed at every join. Check that your setup meets road rules for how auxiliary lights are switched and used.

Miami auto electrical questions

Why do my headlights keep failing in my car parked near the beach?

Salt and moisture can get into the headlight plug, causing corrosion and poor contact. Globes may also fail sooner if the connection is loose or hot. Check the plug behind the headlight for green or burnt marks. Clean it, or replace it if it is damaged, and use dielectric grease to keep moisture out.

Do I need a relay to wire spotlights?

Yes. Spotlights draw a lot of current, more than most dash switches can handle. A relay lets the switch control a small current while the relay carries the heavy load. Fit a fuse close to the battery and use cable sized for the lights. Most spotlight harnesses include a relay, fuse and switch.

Local tip for Miami

If you park near the beach in Miami, lift the bonnet every couple of months and look at the battery and the plugs on the back of the headlights. A quick wipe and a spray of moisture displacer keeps salt from settling in. It takes a few minutes and can prevent annoying faults that are hard to track down later.
