Surfers Paradise

The Surfers Paradise area covers the high-rise beachfront from Surfers down through Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach, plus the canal suburbs and office strips behind it in Bundall, Benowa and the Waters suburbs. Auto electrical work here leans towards basement car park flat batteries, salt air, keyless and camera faults, and a growing number of hybrids and EVs.

Suburbs in Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are towers, hotels and apartments, with the G:link light rail running along the main strip and most cars living underground. Mermaid Beach is lower-rise beach housing along the Gold Coast Highway. Behind the beach, the Nerang River and its canals shape Bundall, Benowa, Broadbeach Waters, Mermaid Waters and Clear Island Waters, where family homes have garages and boat pontoons. Bundall also has a busy office and commercial district. The work changes block by block: car parks and salt on the beach side, family cars, boats and commuters behind it.

Common auto electrical jobs in Surfers Paradise

Underground parking, sea air and the canals all leave their mark on the auto electrical work across this stretch of the coast.

Life underground in high-rise car parks

Thousands of cars in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach live in basement car parks under apartment towers and hotels. Cars that sit for long periods slowly drain their batteries, and trips along the strip are often too short to recharge them. When a car will not start four levels down, getting help can be tricky because of low ceilings and access gates. A regular battery test and a longer drive every week or two goes a long way. Our guide on how to jump start a car safely covers the right order to connect the leads.

Beachfront salt on everyday cars

You do not need to park on the Esplanade to feel the sea air here. Salt drifts several blocks inland on windy days and settles on battery terminals, earth points and plugs. In time you might notice a slow crank, flickering lights or a taillight that stops working. Cleaning the battery terminals and checking earths twice a year stops most of it before it starts. Do not pressure wash the engine bay, as water and electrical plugs do not mix.

Hybrids and EVs in apartment buildings

More apartment buildings in this area are adding EV charging bays, and hybrids are common in the taxi and rideshare fleet. These cars still rely on a small 12V battery to switch on. When it fails, the car can look completely dead even with a full high-voltage battery. The 12V side can be tested and replaced as normal. Anything to do with the high-voltage battery, orange cabling or charging hardware is for licensed professionals only, and fixed 240V charger wiring needs a licensed electrician.

Canal homes and boat trailers

Behind the beach, canal suburbs such as Broadbeach Waters, Mermaid Waters and Benowa have pontoons, tinnies and trailer boats. Public ramps such as the one on T E Peters Drive at Broadbeach Waters get plenty of use. Salt water gets into trailer plugs and lights, and the corrosion appears slowly until a light stops working. Our guide on how to wire a 7-pin trailer plug helps if your plug needs replacing.
