Southport

The Southport area takes in the Gold Coast's CBD, the Broadwater suburbs from Main Beach up to Runaway Bay, and the industrial estates out towards the M1 at Molendinar and Arundel. Auto electrical work here swings from salty boat trailers and apartment car park flat batteries to fleet vans, forklifts and work utes.

Suburbs in Southport

Southport is the commercial heart of the Gold Coast, with office towers, the hospital and university precinct and the G:link light rail running through it. To the north, Labrador, Biggera Waters and Runaway Bay face the Broadwater, where public boat ramps and marinas keep trailers going in and out of salt water. Main Beach and The Spit sit across the water. West of Olsen Avenue the picture changes: Molendinar, Arundel and parts of Ashmore are full of warehouses, workshops and depots near the M1. So one area gives you marine corrosion, inner-city short trips and hard-working fleet vehicles.

Common auto electrical jobs in Southport

Water on one side and industry on the other means two very different kinds of auto electrical work in this part of the Gold Coast.

Broadwater boat ramps and trailer wiring

From Muriel Henchman Drive on The Spit to the ramps at Labrador and Ray Street at Runaway Bay, the Broadwater has some of the busiest launching spots on the coast. Backing a trailer into salt water every weekend is hard on lights, plugs and the wiring loom running along the drawbar. Sealed LED lights, heat-shrunk joints and a plug that is cleaned and sprayed after each trip last far longer. If the lights are playing up, our guide on why trailer lights stop working walks through the usual faults.

Fleet vans and utes in the industrial estates

Molendinar and Arundel are packed with warehouses, trade suppliers and service depots, and the vehicles based there do a lot of short, stop-start runs around the northern Gold Coast. Vans with beacons, inverters, fridges and tool chargers draw a lot of power, and a tired battery or loose earth soon shows up as a no-start in the yard. Regular battery testing, checking alternator output and tidying accessory wiring onto proper fused circuits keeps a fleet on the road instead of waiting on a callout.

Flat batteries in apartment car parks

Southport and Main Beach have a growing number of residential towers, and plenty of cars in those basements only come out once or twice a week. Modern cars draw a little power even when locked, and a battery that sits for days without a decent drive slowly loses charge. Basement car parks often have no power point near the bay, so a small battery maintainer or a regular longer drive is worth considering. Our guide on how to charge a car battery explains the safe way to do it.

Air conditioning on the Smith Street run

Crawling along Smith Street or Olsen Avenue on a humid afternoon is when a weak air conditioner shows itself. Many faults are electrical rather than gas related: a condenser fan that has stopped, a sticking relay, a compressor clutch that will not engage or a pressure switch that has failed. These can be tested with a multimeter and scan tool. Any work on the refrigerant side, including recovering or recharging gas, must be done by a licensed technician.
