Common auto electrical jobs in Main Beach

Main Beach is a narrow strip between the Coral Sea and the Broadwater, running north up The Spit to the Gold Coast Seaway. Salt arrives from both sides, and many cars live in high-rise basements.

Salt from both sides

Few Gold Coast suburbs get salt like Main Beach. Ocean spray drifts in from the beach and the Broadwater adds more from the west. Cars parked outdoors along Main Beach Parade can show corroded terminals, failing headlight connections and dodgy earths sooner than cars inland. Clean the battery and terminals before they crust over, protect them with a spray, and check plugs on headlights and taillights where water collects. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals shows how.

Launching from The Spit

The two ramps at Muriel Henchman Park on The Spit and the ramp at Waterways Drive are popular for getting onto the Broadwater and out through the Seaway. Boats launched here often head offshore, and trailers sit in salt water for longer during busy launches. Sealed lights, marine-grade tinned cable and a well-maintained plug are worth the cost. Check that the lights work before leaving the car park, as the Gold Coast Highway is a busy road to be pulled over on.

Hybrids, EVs and their small batteries

Main Beach has its share of hybrid and electric vehicles parked in apartment buildings. These cars still have a small 12V battery that runs the computers, locks and lights. If it goes flat, the car may not switch on, even with a full high-voltage battery. The 12V battery can be tested and replaced like any other, but the high-voltage system is a job for a licensed professional trained in EV and hybrid systems only.

Holiday apartments and cars that sit

Many Main Beach apartments are holiday homes, and the car in the basement might sit for weeks. A modern car's alarm, keyless entry and modules slowly drain the battery. When the owner returns, the car is flat or shows warning lights. A battery maintainer is the best answer if there is a power point nearby. If not, ask building management whether one can be installed, or arrange for someone to drive the car occasionally.

Main Beach auto electrical questions

My hybrid will not turn on in the basement but the main battery shows charge. What is wrong?

Most likely the small 12V battery has gone flat. It powers the computers that switch the hybrid system on. It can usually be jump started from the 12V jump points under the bonnet, following the owner's manual. Do not touch any orange high-voltage cables. If the 12V battery keeps going flat, have it tested and the car checked for drains.

How often should I clean my battery terminals living right on the beach?

Check them every few months and clean at the first sign of white or green powder. Many Main Beach car owners do it twice a year as a routine. Use a terminal brush, baking soda and water, then dry the area and apply a protective spray. Avoid hosing the engine bay, as water can get into electrical plugs.

Local tip for Main Beach

If you own a holiday apartment in Main Beach, write the car's battery install date and the last time it was driven on a card in the glovebox. Ask whoever looks after the place to start it and run it for 20 minutes every couple of weeks. Better still, ask if the building can provide a power point near your bay for a maintainer.
