Coolangatta

The southern end of the Gold Coast runs from the Currumbin hinterland down to the Tweed border, taking in beachside suburbs, Gold Coast Airport and the industrial estate along Currumbin Creek. Salt air, airport and fleet vehicles, trade vans and rural valley driving all shape the auto electrical work here.

Suburbs in Coolangatta

This area runs along the beach through Currumbin, Tugun, Bilinga and Coolangatta, where salt air is behind a lot of the electrical faults. Gold Coast Airport takes up most of Bilinga, bringing hire cars, shuttle buses and airport fleet vehicles. Inland, Elanora and Currumbin Waters are busy family suburbs, and the industrial estate south of Currumbin Creek is full of trade vans and workshops. Further west, Currumbin Valley is rural and winding, with wildlife and long drives home. The NSW border runs right through the area, so plenty of vehicles cross daily to and from Tweed Heads.

Common auto electrical jobs in Coolangatta

Within a few kilometres you go from beachfront car parks to an airport, an industrial estate and a rural valley, and each one wears vehicles out differently.

Salt air along the beachfront

Cars parked near the beach at Coolangatta, Kirra, Bilinga, Tugun and Currumbin spend their lives in salty, humid air. It shows up as corroded battery terminals, green build-up in globe holders and plugs, and earth connections that slowly fail. Regular cleaning, a terminal protector and a fresh-water rinse under the car help. Our guide on how to clean corroded battery terminals shows the safe way to do it.

Airport and fleet vehicles

Gold Coast Airport keeps hire cars, shuttle buses, taxis and service vehicles moving all day. Fleet vehicles do lots of short runs with the air conditioning on and the engine idling at pick-up zones, which is hard on batteries and alternators. Vehicles working around the airport may also need beacons and two-way radio wiring fitted to a high standard. A battery and charging test at each service helps keep fleet vehicles off the tow truck.

Trade vans in the Currumbin estate

The industrial estate along Currumbin Creek Road is home to plenty of trades, and their vans carry inverters, work lights, fridges and tool chargers. All of that adds load. Correctly sized cable, fuses at the battery and a second battery with a DC-DC charger keep the van starting every morning. Our guide on what size cable you need for 12V helps with planning.

Valley driving and wildlife

Currumbin Creek Road runs about 20 km up Currumbin Valley, with little street lighting and plenty of wildlife at dawn and dusk. Good headlights and properly wired driving lights help, and vehicles parked in rural sheds often suffer rodent damage. A reliable battery matters more when you're a long way from help, so test it before winter and keep a jump pack in the car.
