Common auto electrical jobs in Pacific Pines

Pacific Pines was planned as a family suburb in the 1990s and has grown up around its schools and parks. Many households run a second car for school and sport, and the bush is never far away.

School runs and short trips

A few kilometres to school, then to sport, then home again is a common pattern in Pacific Pines. That kind of driving takes more from the battery than it puts back, especially in winter with headlights and wipers on. Over a few months the battery slowly runs down. Mixing in a longer drive each week, or using a battery charger now and then, helps. Our guide on whether it's the starter motor or the battery helps if the car won't crank.

Fuses and globes on first cars

Many Pacific Pines teenagers drive older cars as their first vehicle. Simple faults, like a dead power socket, a blown brake light or a stereo that won't turn on, are often just a fuse or a globe. Learning to check the fuse box is a useful skill for a new driver. If the same fuse blows again straight away, there's a short circuit that needs finding. Our guide on how to check and replace a fuse shows how.

Bushland visitors under the bonnet

Streets that back onto the Nerang forest get visits from rats, mice and possums looking for shelter. A warm engine bay is attractive, and some newer wiring insulation seems to appeal to rodents. Chewed wires can cause warning lights, dead sensors or a car that won't start. Check under the bonnet for nesting material or droppings, and have damage repaired with proper joins rather than tape.

Bike racks that hide your lights

With mountain bike trails close by, a lot of local cars carry bike racks. A loaded rack can block the number plate and tail lights, which is a fineable offence. Racks that plug into the towbar socket with their own light board solve the problem. If the board doesn't work, check the car's trailer socket and fuses before blaming the rack. Our guide on why trailer lights aren't working applies to light boards too.

Pacific Pines auto electrical questions

How can I tell if rodents have been in my engine bay?

Look for droppings, shredded leaves or paper, chewed insulation and nests near the battery or on top of the engine. A new warning light or a sudden electrical fault after the car has been parked for a while is another hint. If you find damage, have the wiring repaired properly, as poor repairs can fail later or cause shorts.

Do I need a light board on my bike rack?

If the bikes or rack cover your number plate, tail lights or indicators, you need to fix it. A light board that plugs into the trailer socket and carries the number plate is the usual answer. Check the current Queensland rules for the details, and make sure the light board works properly every time you fit it.

Local tip for Pacific Pines

If your street backs onto bushland, don't store pet food, bird seed or rubbish in the garage with the car. They attract rodents, and rodents go looking for a warm engine bay once they're inside. Lifting the bonnet once a month to have a look takes a minute and can save an expensive wiring repair.
