Common auto electrical jobs in Labrador

Labrador has a long Broadwater foreshore and an older housing mix with plenty of retirees, units and boat owners. That means trailer wiring, salt corrosion and cars that sit for a while between drives.

Launching at Broad Street and Loders Creek

Labrador's public ramps put a lot of local trailers into the water. Even a quick dunk gets salt into globe holders and the back of the plug, and then the trailer sits wet in a carport for a week. The result is green corrosion that eats the copper and leaves one side of the trailer dark. Sealed submersible LED lights help, as does lifting the lights off the trailer before launching if they are on a removable board. Rinse the trailer with fresh water when you get home.

Electric winch and tow vehicle wiring

Plenty of Labrador boat owners fit an electric winch to make retrieving easier on their back. A winch draws a big current, so the cable from the battery needs to be sized for the load and the length of the run, with a fuse or circuit breaker close to the battery. Undersized cable gets hot and the winch slows down under load. Our guide on what size cable you need for 12V explains how to work it out.

Waterfront parking and earth straps

Units along Marine Parade often have open car parks facing the Broadwater. Salt air settles on everything under the bonnet, but the earth straps between the engine, body and battery are where it causes the most trouble. A corroded earth can cause dim lights, a slow crank, a gauge that jumps around or a battery light that flickers. Clean the contact points back to bare metal, bolt them down tight and protect them with a spray to stop the salt coming back.

Cars that only go out a few times a week

Labrador has a lot of residents who no longer commute, and their cars might only do the trip to the shops or the doctor. Batteries in these cars tend to sulphate from being left part-charged, and they often fail without much warning. If your car is slow to start after a few days parked, have the battery tested before it lets you down. Our guide on why a car battery keeps going flat covers the usual causes.

Labrador auto electrical questions

How often should I replace the plug on my boat trailer in Labrador?

There is no fixed timeframe, but trailers that launch in the Broadwater every week often need a new plug or a cleaned-up socket every couple of years. Check for green or white powder on the pins and a loose fit. Spray the plug with a moisture displacing product after each trip, and keep a cap on the car's socket. A cheap trailer light tester saves a lot of guessing.

Why does my car battery die faster living near the Broadwater?

The salt itself does not drain the battery, but it corrodes the terminals and earths, which stops the battery charging properly and makes starting harder. Add short trips and a car that sits a lot, and the battery wears out sooner. Keep the terminals clean, check the battery once a year and give the car a longer drive now and then.

Local tip for Labrador

After a day on the Broadwater, unplug the trailer at home and leave the plug pointing down so water can drain out. Spray both the trailer plug and the car's socket with a moisture displacer before you put the cover back on. It takes a minute and stops most of the corrosion that causes failed lights at the next roadside check.
